LOUISE WATKINS MOORE WELLNESS CENTRE, KHATGURIA
About
In 2007, the village did not have any type of health care provider. Local doctors would occasionally organize a health camp and volunteer their time and services to check the health of the women and children as pictured right. Although thoughtful and generous, this was still not sufficient for the needs of the tribal people.
In 2016, Dr. Catherine Porter Moore, a Drury alumna, and her husband Mr. Jonathon Jason Meller graciously donated funds to build a wellness centre in the village. Dr. John E. Moore, Jr., the former Drury University President, also donated for this great cause. Louise Watkins Moore Wellness Centre is named after Dr. Porter Moore’s mother. Since the dedication of the wellness centre on December 31, 2016, it has seen over 12,000 new and repeat patients. It operates three days a week and has a steady medicine supply.
Dr. Moore is a pediatrician in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. At the dedication ceremony, she eagerly began checking young children with her stethoscope. The Louise Watkins Moore Wellness Centre is dedicated to improving women’s reproductive health and childcare, offering services such as birth control, prenatal care and vaccines. Needless to say, all of the people in the village and surrounding areas receive basic healthcare that they need.
Dr. Moore has had a relationship with India since her undergraduate years at Drury and continues to visit to check on the status of the wellness centre.
